Private Investigation Pricing

A Guide to Private Investigator Pricing

The cost of hiring a private investigator can vary widely depending on several factors, including the scope of the investigation, the investigator's experience, geographic location, and additional expenses. Understanding these factors will help you make informed decisions when selecting an investigator and negotiating your fees.

Key Factors Influencing Pricing

  1. Scope of the Investigation:
    • Complexity: The complexity of the investigation, such as the number of individuals involved, the amount of evidence to be gathered, and the geographic area to be covered, will significantly impact the cost.
    • Duration: The estimated duration of the investigation will also influence the pricing. Longer investigations will generally require more time and resources.

  1. Investigator's Experience and Expertise:
    • Specialization: Investigators with specialized expertise in areas like surveillance, computer forensics, or insurance fraud may charge higher rates due to their unique skills.
    • Reputation: Investigators with a strong reputation and track record of successful cases may also command higher fees.

  1. Geographic Location:
    • Cost of Living: The cost of living in different regions can affect pricing. Investigators operating in major metropolitan areas may charge higher rates to account for higher overhead costs.
    • Local Regulations: Local laws and regulations can also impact pricing. For example, some jurisdictions may have specific licensing requirements or restrictions that can influence the cost of services.

  1. Hourly Rate or Flat Fee:
    • Hourly Rate: Some investigators charge an hourly rate for their services. This can be beneficial for clients who are unsure of the exact scope or duration of the investigation.
    • Flat Fee: Other investigators may offer a flat fee for specific types of investigations. This can provide more certainty about the total cost upfront.

  1. Additional Expenses:
    • Travel Costs: If the investigation requires travel, the investigator may charge additional fees to cover transportation, lodging, and other related expenses.
    • Surveillance Equipment: The use of specialized surveillance equipment can also increase the cost of the investigation.
    • Expert Witnesses: If expert witnesses are required to provide testimony or analysis, their fees will be added to the overall cost.

Tips for Understanding Fees

  1. Clearly Define the Scope of Work: Ensure that the investigator fully understands the scope of the investigation and provides a detailed breakdown of the costs involved.
  2. Ask About Retainer Fees: Some investigators may require a retainer fee upfront to secure their services. Discuss the terms of the retainer and how it will be applied to the final bill.
  3. Review the Contract Carefully: Before signing any contract, carefully review the terms and conditions, including the scope of work, fees, and responsibilities - both yours and the investigators.

By understanding these factors and following these tips, you can make informed decisions when hiring a private investigator and ensure that you are getting the best value for your money.

FyInc Private Investigation Pricing

Individual Investigations

Our contract outlines all fees and expenses that may incur on an investigation. During a consultation, a licensed Private Investigator will go over what is needed for your individual investigation and construct a price tailored to you. Since each investigation is different and will require different needs, certain fees may or may not apply. Your investigator will discuss this with you during your consultation. If any unforeseen charges come up during an investigation, your investigator will contact you before any action is taken. Below is a quick look at our pricing. It is our priority to inform our clients, this includes our pricing policies!

  • Our regular hourly fee is $80 per hour. Each case has a Time Log sheet. You will see when your investigator clocks in and out to work on your case. These Time Logs are provided to clients in their reports. Your investigator is required to use the logged time in the most cost effective way for their client.
  • If travel is required for your case, we charge $0.45 per mile. A preset starting and ending point is outlined in our contract. Clients are  provided a Travel Log in their reports to see when, where, and at what time any travel took place for their case.
  • FyInc utilizes the retainer system for our clients convenience. We require a retainer which is an amount set during your initial consultation.
  • Your investigator will stay in contact with you to not only give you case updates but also inform you of retainer amount used. Detailed Reports and Case Logs are provided to our clients for a clear explanation of expenses and findings.
